The memory of an incredible red-and-white afternoon in California

10/07/2023 13:00 / Javier Quezada

On a day like today, but in 2016, Chivas added one more trophy to its trophy cabinet after defeating Veracruz 2-0 at the StubHub! Center (now Dignity Health Sports Park) in Carson, California, they were proclaimed champions of the SuperCopa MX, which unleashed absolute happiness amongst Los ChivaHermanos present in the stands and was the confirmation of the beginning of a great era for our club.

After winning the 2015 Apertura MX Cup, El Rebaño earned the right to compete for this title, which offered the additional reward of qualifying for the 2017 Copa Libertadores playoffs.

For this reason, from the start of the match, the team from Guadalajara sought to monopolize the ball and launched an all-out attack. The first signs of danger came from Carlos Peña at minute 12 and Carlos Cisneros at minute 17, but the former's shot went wide and the latter's went into the goalkeeper's hands. The reward for the rojiblanco's dominance came at 44', when Orbelín Pineda was supported by Ángel Zaldívar, who tried to elude two opponents, but on the rebound, the ball was left to Orbelín inside the box and he simply tapped it in to open the scoreboard.

In the second half, the team from Guadalajara kept up the intense pace and sought to increase the score. At 47', 'Gullit' took a shot from outside the area, but it went straight into the goalkeeper's hands. Edwin Hernández and Orbelín tried from half distance at 52' and 59', but failed to find the target. Carlos Peña had another couple of chances to score, but at 79', the goalkeeper denied him with two hands, and at 87', his attempt went wide of the left post.

Guadalajara did not cease in its struggle to reflect its vast superiority and in the last minute of the match, Eduardo López put in a powerful shot to the back post that our legend, Omar Bravo, sent into the net to give yet another title to our beloved Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara. This goal and the cup meant a farewell to the top scorer in the history of our institution.

In the end, Chivas could not make valid an additional reward of being able to play in the 2017 edition of the Copa Libertadores, since that year Mexican teams stopped attending the prestigious South American championship.

The red and white note
- Although a few days earlier the official presentation of the new red and white jersey was broadcast, this match between Chivas and Veracruz marked the formal debut in match broadcasting for Chivas TV.
