Today is a great day for the entire Rojiblanca Nation, because on this day in 1968, one of the best central defenders in the history of Mexican soccer was born: the 'Emperor' of the back line, Claudio Suárez. For this reason, we join together with great affection to celebrate and remember his outstanding career in soccer and, of course, his legacy with the 'Super Chivas'.

His beginnings in soccer

Claudio Suárez recalls that from a young age he played soccer with his brother in the traditional neighborhood games. However, his interest in pursuing a professional career arose when one of his friends told him he had talent and encouraged him to try out for a professional team.

The sacrifices were not few. He began his professional training at the age of 17 and faced some rejections because he had not had any formal training since childhood. However, thanks to the confidence of his coach at the time, and his own determination, he proved that with effort and discipline, dreams can come true.

A phrase that reflects that commitment and marked his career was: "If they asked me to do 10 repetitions, I did 11."

Claudio Suárez's arrival at Chivas

The "Emperor" arrived at Chivas in 1996, a decision he made because he deeply identified with the club's philosophy and everything Guadalajara represents, despite offers from other teams such as América and Toluca.

The "Emperor" with the Super Chivas

Claudio Suárez was part of the defense of that talented team that captivated the entire Rojiblanca Nation and the whole country: 'La Super Chivas'. Under the direction of Ricardo Ferretti, Chivas won the 1997 Summer League championship, as well as finishing runners-up in the 1998 Winter League. The Emperor's time wearing the Rojiblanca jersey ended in 2000.

What position did Claudio Suárez play?

Suárez played mainly as a center back, although he also played as a right back. He always stood out for his strength in defensive duels, his leadership, and his constant willingness to serve the team.

Return to Chivas and retirement

In 2005, Claudio returned to wear the red and white colors as one of the star players of Chivas USA, Club Guadalajara's affiliate team in the MLS. It was there that he decided to end his professional career, hanging up his boots in 2010.

His legacy with the Mexican National Team

Claudio Suárez's career spanned 21 years as a professional, during which time he made numerous outstanding appearances with the Mexican national team. He played in three World Cups, won three Gold Cups, and captained El Tri to victory in the 1999 Confederations Cup. He also remains one of the players with the most appearances in the history of the national team, with 177 caps.

For his dedication, leadership, and legacy, today the entire Rojiblanca Nation says: Happy birthday, 'Emperor'!
