The Chivas Factor in Mexico’s Rout of Iceland

26/02/2026 13:54 / Enrique Noriega

The Mexico national football team thrashed Iceland national football team 4-0 on Wednesday night at Estadio Corregidora. The match was part of Mexico’s preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—and it featured a decisive factor: the Rojiblanco stamp.

In total, seven players from Club Deportivo Guadalajara were called up for the match. Six started, and three of Mexico’s four goals had direct involvement from Chivas players. It was a night in which the talent and footballing quality of Guadalajara’s representatives made the difference for Javier “Vasco” Aguirre’s squad.

Raúl Rangel started in goal; Richard Ledezma played at right back; Efraín Álvarez, Roberto Alvarado, and Armando González formed the attacking trident; while Brian Gutiérrez operated in a double pivot role—one he has made his own during Clausura 2026 with El Rebaño Sagrado. Diego Campillo completed the Rojiblanca contingent by making his senior national team debut.

Raúl Rangel: Pure Security Between the Posts

The goalkeeper started and delivered with composure. He made a couple of high-difficulty saves, showed confidence on aerial balls, and actively contributed to the buildup from the back, confirming the growth he has shown with his footwork. A solid performance that preserved the clean sheet.

Richard Ledezma: First Goal with El Tri

One of the night’s standout stories. Ledezma scored his first goal for the Mexican National Team, reversing roles in the process—this time it was Armando González who delivered a superb cross for the right back to finish. He played 66 minutes, frequently pushed forward, and left excellent impressions in his goal-scoring breakthrough with the senior side.

Brian Gutiérrez: Tireless and Rewarded with a Goal

He played the full 90 minutes, alternating between interior midfielder and double pivot, and was one of the match’s top performers. He scored his first goal for the national team, registered five key passes, and was fundamental in the high press and the team’s fluidity. Driving forward with pace, precise in distribution, and influential all over the field.

Efraín Álvarez: Talent Between the Lines

He played 57 minutes as a left-sided attacking midfielder in a role very similar to the one he performs at Guadalajara. He drifted into central spaces, combined sharply in tight areas, and recorded a key pass. His striking ability and spatial awareness once again proved decisive, showing that his current form also translates to the international stage.

Roberto Alvarado: In Outstanding Individual Form

Operating as a right-sided attacking midfielder, “Piojo” was constantly involved and dynamic. He roamed across the attacking front, contributed to build-up play, and generated two key passes. His energy, close control, ball protection under pressure, and ability to find space between the lines gave Mexico’s collective play added fluidity.

Armando González: Man of the Match

Named Player of the Match, “La Hormiga” enjoyed a memorable night. He scored his first goal as a senior international and provided his first assist, directly contributing to two of Mexico’s four goals. The reigning Liga MX Golden Boot winner has firmly put his name in the conversation ahead of the World Cup, proving that his current form is no coincidence but the result of consistency and hard work.

Diego Campillo: Debut with Personality

He entered in the 66th minute and played just over 25 minutes in his first senior national team appearance. He alternated between defensive midfielder and center back, displaying versatility. He touched the ball 20 times and completed all 20 of his attempted passes (100% accuracy), 11 in the attacking half and nine in his own. He also recorded a defensive recovery during a more open phase of the match. His debut once again showed he is a player capable of solving multiple needs within a single game.

Mexico won convincingly, but beyond the scoreline, the match against Iceland confirmed something already evident in Guadalajara every week: Rojiblanco talent is ready to compete and make a difference on any stage.
