Jorge Vergara (RIP) taught us that it’s always worth thinking big. A tireless idealist, bold and fearless, he truly believed that audacity and consistency open doors. This March 3, on the anniversary of his birth, we remember him with admiration, because his legacy helped project Guadalajara onto the international stage by laying the groundwork that now allows the Pearl of the West to host the FIFA World Cup for the third time.
He lived by a clear philosophy: “The crazier they say you are, the more successful you’ll be.” That mindset first took shape with Omnilife, which this year celebrates 35 years of being “people taking care of people,” marking the beginning of a business career that was anything but conventional.
Years later, he made waves in soccer by acquiring Club Deportivo Guadalajara, a move many believed was out of reach. There was skepticism and controversy, but for Don Jorge, nothing was impossible. Amid doubt and the hopes of the Rojiblanca Nation, he took on the responsibility of leading Chivas.
Over time, his ambition led him to envision a new home for Mexico’s most popular and beloved team: a venue worthy of its greatness, an architectural icon for Guadalajara, and a place where Rojiblanca families could come together. He dreamed of a stadium capable of hosting World Cup matches… and he built it. Today, Estadio Akron is getting ready to host four matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Home of Mexicans is made of concrete and steel — but also of perseverance, courage, and vision. It’s living proof that when you believe without fear and put in the work day after day, even the most impossible dreams can come true.
Don Jorge Vergara’s legacy remains strong and relevant. “He tried — and he made it,” is how he wanted to be remembered. And with 100 days to go until the world’s biggest tournament kicks off, his mark is undeniable: he shaped Chivas, transformed Guadalajara, and showed that daring to dream is always worth it.
