The Breakdown of the Victory: Chivas Was Far Superior to Santos

15/03/2026 14:02 / Enrique Noriega

Guadalajara delivered a commanding and high-level performance this Saturday at Estadio AKRON, where it defeated Santos Laguna 3–0 in a Matchday 11 clash of the Liga MX Clausura 2026. The final scoreline even felt short considering what happened on the field, as the Rebaño was overwhelmingly superior from start to finish.

From the opening minutes, the team coached by Gabriel Milito made it clear that it had identified the opponent’s weaknesses. Guadalajara attacked intelligently between the lines and repeatedly exploited the space between fullbacks and center-backs, generating a wave of chances early in the match.

That persistence paid off in the 11th minute. A great collective play down the left flank—initiated by Omar Govea and continued by Efraín Álvarez—ended with a precise low cross into the heart of the box. There, Armando González first set a screen for Roberto Alvarado, whose shot was saved by Carlos Acevedo, and then pounced on the rebound to open the scoring and net his seventh goal of the tournament.

The Rojiblanco dominance continued and led to the second goal—again scored by González. The play began with a pinpoint pass from Diego Campillo, highlighting his growing influence by releasing Richard Ledezma into space. The right wing-back’s low cross traveled across the six-yard box until it found “La Hormiga,” who finished to complete a high-quality brace.

Beyond the goals, Chivas maintained its superiority through intense pressing that forced the visitors to rely on long balls. However, the Rojiblanca defense responded with authority: Campillo and José Castillo dominated aerial duels and interceptions, neutralizing one of Santos’ main offensive weapons—direct passes toward their attacking focal point.

In the second half, Guadalajara kept full control. It created numerous chances that were not converted due to small details in the finishing or interventions by the opposing goalkeeper. The final reward came near the end, when Ricardo Marín—who had entered with great mobility as the lone striker—sealed the match with a beautiful backheel finish that made it 3–0 and brought the fans to their feet.

Collectively, the team stood out for its fluidity and tactical versatility. Milito once again opted for a two-striker setup from the start, allowing better occupation of attacking spaces. He also used a back line of four defenders that, during attacking phases, transformed into a line of three when Rubén González dropped into buildup alongside Campillo and Castillo. Defensively, the midfielder moved back to form a double pivot with Govea, giving the team a clear pressing structure.

Adjustments continued in the second half with substitutions that maintained control of the match. The introduction of Miguel Tapias reinforced the defense as the left center-back, while the midfield was anchored by Govea, Álvarez, and an outstanding performance from Alvarado. “El Piojo” excelled receiving between the lines, making the difference with his dribbling, vision, and off-ball work, while also directly contributing to the play that led to the opening goal.

The victory was complete not only because of the result but because every tactical plan from the coaching staff found a positive response on the field. With this win, Guadalajara climbed to third place in the standings and, with a game in hand, sits very close to the top. If the Rebaño wins its rescheduled match against Club León next Wednesday, it could rise again to the top of the Clausura 2026 table.

The message was clear: Chivas is enjoying an excellent footballing moment, with solidity, tactical variety, and an attack that constantly creates danger. If the team maintains—or even raises—this level, it will be a serious contender for the title.
