May 4th is a date that lives on in the memory of the Rojiblanca Nation, as in 1931 Don Tomás Balcázar was born in Guadalajara—a footballer who not only shined on the pitch, but also helped shape the identity of Club Deportivo Guadalajara. His story is that of a figure who transcended generations and left an unforgettable legacy with the team of his heart.
His beginnings with Guadalajara
Originally from the Mexicaltzingo neighborhood, Don Tomás Balcázar signed with Guadalajara on May 17, 1949, when he was just 18 years old. He made his debut on June 12 of that same year in Veracruz, and just two weeks later, he scored his first goal in a Clásico Tapatío, marking the beginning of a career that would place him among the most important names in club history.
A striker who defined an era
With a natural scoring instinct and a lethal header, Balcázar became a key piece of the team. He was part of the squad that won the 1956-57 League title and the 1957 Campeón de Campeones. He also left a historic mark by scoring in six consecutive league matches during the 1952-53 season, a record he shares with Max Prieto. Additionally, he became the first Guadalajara player to score abroad, achieving this milestone in 1949 against the Honduras National Team.
His legacy with the Rebaño
His legacy did not end as a player. After hanging up his boots, he joined the coaching staff of Javier de la Torre during the golden era of the ‘Campeonísimo’, contributing to the club’s multiple titles. Years later, he also served as assistant coach to Alberto Guerra during the 1986-87 championship and played a role in the development of young talents within the Rojiblanca Academy.
His time with the National Team
He made his debut with the Mexico National Team in 1952 and took part in the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland, where he even scored against France. In total, Don Tomás Balcázar represented his country 11 times and scored 6 goals, solidifying his quality on the international stage.
Today, his legacy remains intact as a symbol of identity, tradition, and love for the colors. Because to speak of Don Tomás Balcázar is to speak of what it truly means to be part of Guadalajara.
That’s why today, all of the Rojiblanca Nation sends him a warm embrace to the sky.
