The journey of Chivas’ players at the FIFA World Cup 2026 came to an end this Sunday, as Mexico fell 3-2 to England in the Round of 16.
Head coach Javier Aguirre once again relied on a strong Chivas core for one of Mexico’s biggest matches of the tournament. Raúl “Tala” Rangel made his fifth consecutive start between the posts, while Luis Romo provided experience and stability in midfield. Meanwhile, Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado was once again one of El Tri’s standout performers and finished the match as the Mexican player with the most completed passes.
In the 61st minute, Brian Gutiérrez came on to replace Romo and injected fresh energy into the Mexican side. The Chivas midfielder created the play that led to the penalty converted by Raúl Jiménez, bringing Mexico back within one goal.
Despite Mexico’s relentless push for an equalizer and several dangerous attacks on England’s goal, the effort was not enough to secure a place in the Quarterfinals.
With that, Mexico’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to a close. In a historic edition of the tournament, El Tri finished among the competition’s final 16 teams after an outstanding Group Stage in which they posted a perfect record.
