TOP 5 Moments of Joel ‘Tiburón’ Sánchez’s Chivas Career

17/08/2026 11:21 / Melissa Hernández

Today, the Chiva Nation joins in celebrating the 52nd birthday of a Rojiblanco legend! On this day in 1974, Joel Sánchez was born. He went on to become one of the most memorable defenders in Chivas history and an important part of the Guadalajara side that lifted the Verano 1997 title at Estadio Jalisco.

As part of the celebration, we look back at five moments that shaped ‘Tiburón’ Sánchez’s career with Guadalajara, from his early days in the Rojiblanco Academy to becoming a champion with the Rebaño and making his mark with the Mexican National Team.

1. His First Steps in the Rojiblanco Academy

Joel Sánchez began his journey as a Rojiblanco at a very young age. At just 12 years old, he joined Guadalajara’s youth academy, where he began building the path that would eventually take him to the First Team.

His arrival at the academy also marked the beginning of a nickname that would follow him throughout his entire career.

2. The Birth of ‘Tiburón’

During the final stage of a tryout, when only 30 young players remained in contention for a place at Chivas, Joel was fortunate enough to be among those selected.

One of the boys who did not make the cut made a comment about him: “He looks like a shark.” Although the nickname did not exactly win him over at first, his teammates began using it as a joke until, over time, ‘Tiburón’ became part of his identity and a nickname he proudly carries to this day.

3. The Unforgettable Scrimmage That Changed His Story

During an internal scrimmage, the young academy player was looking to show his intensity to the coaching staff, but instead ended up involved in a curious series of incidents.

In the first minute, he collided with Alberto Coyote, causing him to suffer a dislocated joint. In the fourth minute, an aerial challenge with Daniel Corral left the defender with an ankle injury. Then, in the 10th minute, a loose ball resulted in ‘Tilón’ Chávez also injuring his knee.

After the incident, Joel was taken out of training and thought Alberto Guerra might even remove him from the team. Instead, the opposite happened: the coach praised his intensity and told him he would travel with the First Team for the first time.

4. The Debut That Fulfilled His Dream of Playing for Chivas

His big opportunity came when Guadalajara traveled to face Toluca. Joel Sánchez finally made his First Team debut, taking the first step in a career that would eventually make him one of the most recognized defenders of his generation.

‘Tiburón’ himself described the moment as a “dream debut,” while also recalling the excitement of playing for Chivas on the road, where, as he pointed out, the Rebaño is always at home.

5. The Verano 1997 Championship

‘Tiburón’ Sánchez’s story reached one of its highest points during the Verano 1997, when he was part of the team that won the Liga MX title against Toros Neza at Estadio Jalisco, lifting one of the most memorable trophies in Guadalajara’s recent history.

That championship marked the emergence of Joel Sánchez as one of the leaders of a generation that brought glory back to the Rebaño and secured its place forever in the memory of the Rojiblanco Nation.

A True Rojiblanco at Heart

From those first steps in the Rojiblanco Academy to becoming a champion with Guadalajara, Joel ‘Tiburón’ Sánchez built a legacy that remains part of the Rojiblanco history.

Today, we celebrate his 52nd birthday and look back at five moments that helped shape the career of one of the defenders most beloved by Chivashermanos.

Happy birthday, ‘Tibu’!
