Today, the Nación Rojiblanca has a reason to celebrate! Diego Campillo is turning 25, and his journey as a footballer has been defined by resilience and hard work. Ever since leaving his hometown of Durango to pursue his dream of playing for Chivas, he has faced various challenges that have shaped his character and identity as a player.
To mark the occasion, we're celebrating by looking back at 'Campi's journey, from his early days to becoming an established player for the team he loves.
His Journey Through the Cantera Rojiblanca
Leaving his family at the age of 14 to pursue an opportunity with Chivas was one of Diego's first major challenges. Although there were moments when he considered giving up, his desire to become a professional footballer drove him to keep going and fight for his dream.
Throughout his development, Campillo progressed through several Cantera Rojiblanca categories, from Sub 15, Sub 17, and Sub 20 to Tapatío, with whom he won the championship in Clausura 2023. Each stage was part of a process that allowed him to gain experience and showcase the talent that would eventually bring him closer to the First Team.
Resilience and Love for Guadalajara
His journey also took him away from home in search of opportunities. His spells with Mineros de Zacatecas in Clausura 2022 and Bravos de Juárez in Apertura 2023 allowed him to gain playing time and continue developing as a professional footballer.
Diego made the most of those experiences and returned to Guadalajara stronger. His return to El Rebaño in Apertura 2025 gave him a fresh opportunity to demonstrate his abilities and earn a place in the First Team.
A Key Player for Gabriel Milito
Today, Campillo stands out for his versatility in Gabriel Milito's system, as he can fill several positions along the defensive line. As a sweeper, he excels at reading the game, defending large spaces, and playing the ball out from the back. He can also operate as a left-sided stopper, where he provides defensive solidity and helps halt opposition attacks.
His contributions go beyond defending. Diego also knows how to join the attack and create danger, as he showed in the most recent match against Tigres in Jornada 12. He made a forward run down the left flank and delivered the cross that led to Guadalajara's equalizing goal.
Apertura 2026: A Reflection of His Growth
Campillo's current form reflects how far he has come. During Apertura 2026, he has made 11 appearances, including 10 starts, and logged 867 minutes. He also scored a goal in Jornada 5 against Xolos de Tijuana.
These numbers highlight his development and reflect the importance he has gained at Guadalajara, where he continues to contribute defensively and deliver in crucial moments.
Called Up to the Mexican National Team
His growth as a footballer has also been reflected in his call-ups to the Mexican National Team. Campillo was selected by Javier Aguirre for training camps ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was also included in Rafael Márquez's first squad selection, featuring in the international friendlies against Peru and the United States.
A Birthday with a Rojiblanco Touch
At 25, Diego Campillo represents a story of hard work, perseverance, and love for Chivas. The young man who left Durango to chase his dream now wears the Rojiblanco colors as an important member of the team, having followed a path that demanded patience and strength to keep moving forward.
For your commitment in every match and the pride with which you wear these colors, the Nación Rojiblanca wishes you a Happy Birthday, Campillo!
