From Rookie to Wearing the Chivas Captain’s Armband: The Day Everything Changed for Rubén González

24/02/2026 11:07 / Roberto García

There are days that remain etched in our lives forever and grow more meaningful as the years pass. For Rubén González, that date is February 24, because 13 years ago he experienced an invaluable moment that marked him forever, both personally and professionally.

On that afternoon in 2013, “Oso” stepped onto a Liga MX field for the first time at just 19 years old, making his debut in a Matchday 8 clash of the Clausura 2013 between Guadalajara and León at Estadio AKRON. For the occasion, the gritty midfielder wore number 43 on his back.

Rubén received the trust of Benjamín Galindo to log his first professional minutes when he entered the pitch in the 61st minute, replacing Luis “Vaquerito” Morales. “El Maestro” called on the then-rookie and gave him a single mission: provide solidity in the Rojiblanco midfield alongside Patricio Araujo.

In the end, the adjustment paid off for the Chivas head coach, as “Oso” and “Pato” contained León’s attacking pace. El Rebaño Sagrado regained control of the match and secured the win thanks to a brace from Marco Fabián, sealing a 2-1 victory.

Thirteen years after that landmark day, Rubén González is now a well-established name within Guadalajara’s squad, with 258 Liga MX appearances to his name, 121 of them with Chivas. Today, he serves as one of the captains of El Rebaño Sagrado, continuing to provide experience, savvy, strong game awareness, and solidity in midfield, where he remains a tireless ball winner.
