Five Chivas players stake their claim for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Our five Rojiblancos were in action with the Mexican National Team during the March FIFA window, as Javier Aguirre gave them minutes in high-level matches against Portugal in Mexico City and Belgium in Chicago.

The Chivas players delivered strong performances to remain in contention for a spot in the final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a 0-0 draw against the Portuguese side and a 1-1 result against the Red Devils.

Raúl Rangel, total reliability between the posts.

‘Tala’ started both matches and delivered outstanding performances. Composed, reliable, and decisive in key moments, he once again proved he is in exceptional form. With his reflexes and game reading, he also showed his ability to build from the back with his feet—an increasingly crucial trait at the international level.

A stat that highlights his form: he has conceded just one goal in his last six matches with Mexico. Rangel continues to establish himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the country and is taking firm steps toward claiming the Tricolor’s starting spot for the World Cup.

Brian Gutiérrez, versatility and personality.

Brian started both matches and left very positive impressions. Against Portugal, he played as a left-sided attacker with freedom to drift inside, while versus Belgium he dropped into midfield.

In both roles, he displayed physical strength, excellent technical ability, and sound decision-making. He was constantly involved, combining well in tight spaces and applying high pressure that unsettled opponents. His development is evident, and his trajectory points not only toward making the final squad but also competing for an important role within the national team.

Roberto Alvarado, impact in both boxes.

‘Piojo’ once again proved to be a difference-maker. He started as a right winger in both matches but adapted into a wing-back role as needed.

Beyond his attacking quality, he stood out for his defensive work. Against Portugal, he managed to contain Nuno Mendes, while versus Belgium he faced high-level duels against Jérémy Doku, coming out on top in most of them. His performances confirm he is enjoying one of the best moments of his career.

Armando González, valuable minutes in a demanding context.

The Rojiblanco striker featured in both matches off the bench. Although he entered during more open phases of the games, he gained valuable minutes in a highly competitive environment.

The current Liga MX top scorer has gained significant international experience early this year, a key factor in his development and adaptation to the pace of international football.

Richard Ledezma, adaptability and commitment.

Ledezma played around 30 minutes against Portugal in a less familiar role. Usually a wing-back, he was deployed as a right winger, presenting a different challenge that he approached with commitment and effort.

He stood out mainly for his defensive work and his willingness to adapt to the team’s needs.

The race for a spot in the World Cup squad remains open, and there’s no doubt that our five Rojiblancos made a strong case to be included in Mexico’s final list, while continuing to contribute to Chivas’ momentum in the Clausura 2026.
