Today is a very special day for the Nación Rojiblanca! Jair García, the former striker who etched his name into Chivas history by scoring the club’s 3,000th goal, celebrates his 48th birthday. That historic strike made him part of the memories cherished by the Rebaño Sagrado and Chivahermanos, leaving an unforgettable mark on the club’s history.
Jair García Gamboa was born on October 25, 1978, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, a hometown connection that linked him to the team he loved from the very beginning. On his birthday, we join in the celebration by looking back at some of the most memorable moments of his career with Chivas.
His Early Days in Soccer
His soccer journey began at a very young age in Guadalajara, where he played for a club called ‘Leoncitos’. There, he tried out different positions: he started as a goalkeeper, moved to center back, and eventually found his place up front as a striker. Although he was born in Guadalajara, his family moved to the Huasteca Potosina region when he was eight years old, where he continued developing his soccer skills.
From an early age, his talent allowed him to compete against older players and earn a spot on the Huasteca Select Team, with which he competed in a national tournament. His performances caught the attention of scouts, and after standing out in a four-team tournament organized by Monterrey, he joined Rayados’ youth academy.
In 1999, he made his first-team debut for the Monterrey side in a Clásico Regio against Tigres at Estadio Universitario.
His Arrival in Guadalajara
Jair García’s move to Chivas came as a surprise that he discovered on television. While watching the Draft broadcast, he heard his name mentioned among the player transfers: Monterrey would send him to Guadalajara on loan with an option to buy.
The news filled him with excitement because of what it meant to wear the jersey of Mexico’s most beloved team, as well as the opportunity to return to his hometown.
The Goal That Made Him a Rojiblanco Prospect
During his first six months with Chivas, Jair played in several positions, away from his natural role as a striker. However, when Óscar Ruggeri took over as head coach of the Rojiblancos, Jair was given an opportunity to play up front.
In the first match in which the coach deployed him as a striker, against Tecos in Matchday 10 of the Invierno 2001 tournament, Jair responded with a goal. His performance proved crucial in helping Guadalajara secure the victory. From that point on, his goals helped convince the club to exercise its purchase option and make his move to the Rojiblanco squad permanent.
Chivas’ 3,000th Goal
One of the most significant moments in Jair García’s career with Guadalajara came during the Clausura 2003 tournament, when he forever etched his name into Rojiblanco history by scoring the club’s 3,000th goal.
The historic moment took place at Estadio Mariano Matamoros in Xochitepec, Morelos, which was then the home ground of Colibríes. During Matchday 8, Chivas faced the Morelos-based team in a match that became memorable for the historic goal scored for the club. That strike became one of the most meaningful memories of his time with the Rebaño Sagrado and a source of pride for the Nación Rojiblanca.
For your dedication and love for these colors, the Nación Rojiblanca wishes you a very happy birthday, Jair!
